about

This is a live recording of the first performance by the group that became Velvet Smith, here named Bloodied Motor Scooter. Opening for Chicago's MATH at the Rhumba Box in downtown Kansas City on 25th October 1993. Four "songs", some missing the beginning seconds for various reasons. Usually this was because we had a tendency to just jump straight into the set without a break after tuning/soundcheck. The line-up for this first show is a bit of an oddity due to the percussion involved, and that there was only one guitar in the mix with the bass and violin. Another unique particular about this set is that Miss PoPo sang in English as opposed to Japanese which would come later. After this show, we added our second guitarist and dropped any sort of drummer until our very last performance together sometime less than a year later. Some early germination of material that would reappear in later incarnations can be heard in this first public performance. It should be noted that there were a very minimal number of rehearsals before this show, and none at all with our percussionist for the night.

Thanks as always should be given to Jeff G, our soundman at the Rhumba Box, who made us louder than we could've done ourselves. And he pressed the 'record' button on the tape deck too. Some editing of extraneous chatter/tuning/etc and a bit of tweaking of levels was involved before posting this for public consumption, but not much, in all honesty.

The cover image for this album is an original flyer, the original of which was hand drawn by Miss PoPo with incredible detail and beauty. Photos for each of the tracks contained are from an old disposable b/w film camera taken in a wooded area in KC several years later in early wintertime.

Enjoy the listen, and thanks for the kind attention paid to the early steps of several creative years among many people.

about

petit mal music (label) Oakland, California

This site is to document the evolution of "band" to "label", as I had for 15 years performed and recorded solo material under the "petit mal" moniker. In 2008, a series of 3" cds was begun to release my own and related material. Since then, the relations are expanding and I've dropped the solo moniker in favor of my own name. This is now a home for unreleased live recordings, archives and 3" cds. ... more
